DESIGN INTERN
Tera Janelle Design is a full-service residential interior design firm, specializing in custom renovations and ground-up new construction projects, guiding clients through every detail of the design, build, and furnishing process.
Based in Lynchburg, Virginia, we work with clients throughout Virginia and beyond.
While our internship program meets the internship requirements of most university programs, it is independently a part-time job within our firm.
The internship follows our studio schedule and operates independently of academic calendars, university holidays, and semester breaks.
Internship Program Requirements:

Schedule: 20 hours per week during studio hours (Monday–Thursday, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM)

Duration: Six months (520 hours)

Extension: Upon invitation, interns may complete a second consecutive six-month internship
Qualifications:
-
Senior or graduate-level student pursuing Interior Design or Architecture
-
Applicants with two or more years of relevant professional experience in residential interiors or architecture are also encouraged to apply
-
Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and SketchUp/3D rendering is required and must be demonstrated within the submitted portfolio
Intern Role:
Interns receive hands-on experience in all aspects of a residential interior design studio, including:

Building proficiency in AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite

Developing detailed construction drawings, including floor plans, interior elevations, custom cabinetry, and millwork
-
Creating SketchUp models and photorealistic renderings
-
Assisting with project management, including budgeting, procurement tracking, scheduling, and receiving

Participating in design installations and final styling for professional photography

Supporting furnishings selections and presentation development
-
Organizing and maintaining the studio's materials and sample library
-
Contributing to marketing initiatives and the day-to-day operations of the studio

We're seeking an experienced designer with a passion for residential design and a strong technical foundation, with a particularly exceptional eye for furnishings and the thoughtful, personal styling that creates a truly personal home.
The ideal candidate enjoys working closely with design and procurement teams, and contributing to a highly collaborative studio culture.
Responsibilities:

Develop detailed construction drawings, including floor plans, interior elevations, reflected ceiling plans, custom cabinetry, and millwork details.

Collaborate with the Principal Designer to develop and refine design concepts from schematic design through construction documentation.

Lead the design and specification of furnishings, textiles, window treatments, rugs, artwork, and accessories
-
Create accurate 3D models and renderings to communicate design intent.

Produce highly organized project specifications and finish schedules.
-
Review, coordinate, and annotate architectural, construction, and shop drawings.
-
Work closely with contractors, consultants, and trades to ensure accurate implementation of design plans.

Communicate professionally with clients, vendors, contractors, and the design team to foster clear communication, creative problem-solving, and exceptional project execution.

Support project management, including budgeting, procurement, receiving, scheduling, and order tracking.

Oversee furniture installations and final styling, thoughtfully layering accessories, artwork, and textiles that reflect a deeply personal, curated home
-
Participate in continuing education, industry markets, and professional development opportunities to remain current with design trends, products, and technology.
Qualifications:
-
Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in high-end residential interior design (required).

Degree in Interior Design or Architecture from an accredited program preferred, but not required.

Exceptional proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite (portfolio required).

Demonstrated experience producing comprehensive construction documents and detailed cabinetry and millwork drawings.

Experience coordinating with contractors throughout construction and installation.

Strong knowledge of residential furnishings, custom furniture, textiles, finishes, lighting, and decorative materials.

Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to both technical and financial accuracy.

Self-motivated, collaborative, and eager to contribute to a team-oriented studio environment.
Schedule - This position follows a hybrid schedule:
-
In Studio: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday (9:30 AM–4:00 PM)
-
Remote, as projects allow: Tuesday (9:30 AM–1:30 PM)
Additional hours may be available based on project workload and installation schedules.
